Weissman / Dancewear Solutions is a national Recital Costume/Dancewear catalog/web retailer and manufacturer that is experiencing rapid growth. The Senior Designer is responsible for the design of costumes or dancewear that is highly creative, brand relevant, and trend appropriate product for the Weissman customer. This individual demonstrates leadership, ability to problem solve, mentor, and foster a team environment. He or she protects the integrity of the brand by delivering product that fulfills the Merchandising strategies and meets the customers’ expectations in quality, design, and functionality. The Senior Designer assumes a greater leadership role with the responsibility to monitor the assortment, style and trend development plan, and fabric usage to ensure design timelines are met throughout the season. Experience and leadership of Senior Designer is at a higher level than Designer. This position requires close collaborative partnerships with Technical Design, Product Development, Merchandising, Sourcing, and Production.
Design: Under the direction of the Director of Design, utilizes the assortment plan and design documents to consistently deliver creative concepts that have commercial appeal, meet sales and margin targets and have an excellent sketch selection rate, survey score, and adoption rate. Takes into consideration fabric and trim usage and salability of all designs. Ability to create designs that translate relevant industry trends to the Weissman customer and align with product assortment.
Trend and Market Knowledge: Responsible for researching global and domestic markets to identify new trends, fabrics, accessories, and techniques; ensures product is consistent with market trends while maintaining brand integrity and business strategies. Influences the assortment with key design ideas. Travels to relevant dance events, domestic/international markets, and fabric shows. Attends local and national dance recitals and competitions to analyze current dance trends. Demonstrates an excellent knowledge of the Weissman customer, brand, and competitive landscape.
Fabric, Trim, and Color Development: Assists with the selection of raw materials and colors to be utilized in the design process. Travels and shops domestic and international markets for new fabrics, trims, color inspiration and accessories.
Technical Skills: Works with Direct Reports/Design Assistants to create technical flats of designs with accurate construction call outs. Communicates design details to Pattern Makers and Technical Designers. Fits prototypes and preproduction samples independently with assistance from Technical Design partners to maintain the design aesthetic including silhouette, fit, and styling direction.
Leadership: Manages and mentors direct reports or assigned mentees and completes performance reviews. Maintains work flow and balance throughout the design department. Completes special fit and design projects. Strong work ethic and ability to multitask. Assesses current processes and productivity and suggests enhancements. Ensures adherence to all deadlines and calendar. Creates strong cross functional partnerships with Pattern and Technical Design partners.
Communication: Displays a high level of communication and presentation skills. Ability to communicate creative vision from concept to finished product and present designs to merchants for line consideration. Uses sound judgement; holds self and others accountable for their commitments and conduct.
Business Analytics: Consistently drives sales performance by analyzing sales and assortment along with competitor’s assortments, pricing, and catalog/web presentations. Reviews planning documents and design tools to monitor design progress throughout the season.
Quality: Collaboratively works with Product Development team to ensure that all products meet or exceed the customer’s needs and expectations.
Expected Outcomes: Financial: Designs that consistently meet planned sales and margin goals.
Timelines: Meets all internal Design, Merchandising, Purchasing and Marketing deadlines as planned. Monitors work flow throughout the design department to ensure design goals are met.
Leadership: Successful introduction of new ideas, business opportunities and process efficiencies by confidently selling these ideas/processes internally while listening to and incorporating appropriate suggestions of management, peers and subordinates. Successful development and training of design team members.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Apparel Design
7 to 10+ years of professional experience in Apparel Design
A comprehensive designer skill set which includes excellent illustration and CAD skills, fashion and color design aesthetic, and ability to design highly creative concepts
Strong aesthetic related to the Weissman brands and customer base
Excellent understanding of garment construction, fit, finishes and industry resources
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud
Prior knits experience preferred
Ability to travel to international and domestic markets
Demonstrated ability to work effectively cross-functionally and to influence ideas internally. Experience with Product Development Process; understanding how to take a design from concept through commercialization
Strong leadership skills, and ability to partner with management cross-functionally
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and collaborative team environment; flexible and adaptable to change
