Reports to: Director of Design/Vice President of Design
Position Summary: Weissman / Dancewear Solutions is a national Recital Costume/Dancewear catalog/web retailer and manufacturer. The Assistant Fabric & Color Specialist is responsible for organizing the development of new fabrics, trims, and colors for the Design Department as well as providing general production support to the Design Team. This position requires close collaborative partnerships with Technical Design, Product Development, Merchandising, Sourcing, and Production.
Fabric and Trim Development: Acts as a liaison between Design, Technical Design, and Sourcing Teams. Communicates new fabric/trim arrival dates, color adds/drops and development changes. Creates and updates fabric, trim and accessory reference walls and spreadsheets. Set up new fabrics and trims in PLM system and updates during development. Schedules new fabric and trim presentations, reviews and handovers to adhere to calendar timelines.
Design Team Assistance: Maintains visual reference charts for Designers. Organizes inventory of received sample yardage, trims and accessories. Communicates new fabrics/trims, color adds/drops, and changes in development to the Design Team. Completes training on entering BOMS and colorway details. Writes fabric information for surveys.
Color: Assists with lap dips for new colors in a variety of fabrics to ensure color consistency. Assist with reviewing catalog images for color correction. Maintains color correction swatch library.
Color and Fabric Knowledge: Responsible for having a working knowledge of fabric categories and learns about the company’s history of fabric and trim. Demonstrates an understanding of knit and woven fabrics including properties, performance, and quality. Must score well on the Munsell color system visual test and be able to differentiate between similar hues of color.
Trend and Market Knowledge: Responsible for researching new trends in fabric, trim, and color and communicating the information to the Design Team. Assists with Trend/Concept and Fabric presentations. Attends local dance recitals and competitions to analyze current dance trends and create relevant recaps.
Technical Skills: Creates technical flats of new trims and accessories with accurate construction call outs. Communicates design details and development changes to Product Development Teams.
Communication: Displays a high level of communication and presentation skills. Uses sound judgment; holds self and others accountable for their commitments and conduct.
Quality: Collaboratively works with Product Development and Sourcing to
ensure that all products meet or exceed the customer’s needs and expectations.
Expected Outcomes: Timelines: Meets all internal Design, Merchandising, Purchasing and Marketing deadlines as planned
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Apparel Design, Fine Arts, Textiles, or similar 2+ years of professional experience in Textile, Apparel Design, or similar
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong aesthetic related to color and fabrication
Must score well on the Munsell color system visual test
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud
Demonstrated ability to work effectively cross-functionally
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and collaborative team environment; flexible and adaptable to change
