Reports to: Director of Design

Position Summary: Weissman / Dancewear Solutions is a national Recital Costume/Dancewear catalog/web retailer and manufacturer that is experiencing rapid growth. The Fabric & Color Specialist is responsible for organizing the development of new fabrics, trims, and colors for the Design Department as well as providing industry insight and an aesthetic eye for the development of these critical materials. This individual supplies fabric and trim to the company that is new, compelling, well-priced and well-suited to the customer. This position requires close collaborative partnerships with Technical Design, Product Development, Merchandising, Sourcing, and Production.

Responsibilities:

Fabric and Trim Development: Acts as a liaison between Design, Technical Design, Pattern, Purchasing, and Sourcing Teams to communicate fabric and trim arrival dates and development changes. Has an active role in selection of new fabrics and trims for the upcoming seasons. Monitors current fabric and trim inventory levels and orders additional sample yardage and trim as needed. Creates key seasonal color palettes for fabric and trim. Facilitates and schedules new fabric and trim presentations, reviews and handovers to adhere to calendar timelines.

Design Team Assistance: Maintains raw materials sample budget for the Design Department. Provides visual fabric reference charts for designers and reviews BOMS and colorway details. Works with IT department to create accurate reporting. Reviews fabric information written for surveys.

Color: Oversees the lap dipping process for new colors in a variety of fabrics to ensure color consistency. Reviews catalog images and sends comments for color correction.

Color and Fabric Knowledge: Responsible for having a comprehensive understanding of the company’s history of fabric and trim. Demonstrates a strong understanding of knit and woven fabrics including properties, performance, and quality. Must score well on the Munsell color system visual test and be able to differentiate between similar hues of color.

Trend and Market Knowledge: Responsible for researching new trends in fabric, trim, and color and communicating the information to the Design Team. Assists with Trend/Concept and Fabric presentations including the creation of the Evolution of Fabric document. Travels to domestic and international fabric shows and markets. Attends local dance recitals and competitions to analyze current dance trends and create relevant recaps.

Technical Skills: Builds fabric technical packages and hands over new fabrics to Sourcing team. Communicates design details and development changes to Product Development Teams.

Communication: Displays a high level of communication and presentation skills. Uses sound judgement; holds self and others accountable for their commitments and conduct.

Quality: Collaboratively works with Product Development and Sourcing to ensure that all products meet or exceed the customer’s needs and expectations.

Expected Outcomes:

Financial: Maintains raw material sample budget to meet financial plan.

Timelines: Meets all internal design, merchandising, purchasing and marketing deadlines as planned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Apparel Design, Fine Arts, Textiles, or similar

2 to 5+ years of professional experience in Textile, Apparel Design, or similar

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Strong initiative and reliability

Strong aesthetic related to color and fabrication

Must score well on the Munsell color system visual test

Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud

Demonstrated ability to work effectively cross-functionally and to influence ideas internally

Ability to travel to international and domestic markets

Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and collaborative team environment; flexible and adaptable to change

Must align in value system professionally and personally with the culture of Weissman.
