Title: Designer

Reports to: Senior Designer

Position Summary: Weissman / Dancewear Solutions is a national Costume/Dancewear catalog/web retailer and manufacturer. The Senior Designer is responsible for the design of costumes or dancewear that is highly creative, brand relevant, and trend appropriate product for the Weissman customer. This individual demonstrates leadership, ability to problem solve, mentor, and foster a team environment. He or she protects the integrity of the brand by delivering product that fulfills the Merchandising strategies and meets the customers’ expectations in quality, design, and functionality. Experience in leadership is a plus. This position requires close collaborative partnerships with Technical Design, Product Development, Merchandising, Sourcing, and Production.



Under the direction of the Director of Design, frequently delivers creative concepts that have commercial appeal, meet sales and margin targets, have a very good sketch selection rate, survey score, and adoption rate. Takes into consideration fabric and trim usage and salability of all designs. Designs and works independently to translate relevant industry trends to the Weissman customer.


Trend and Market Knowledge:

Responsible for researching global and domestic markets to identify new trends, fabrics, accessories, and techniques; ensures product is consistent with market trends while maintaining brand integrity and business strategies. Influences the assortment with key design ideas. Travels to relevant dance events, domestic/international markets, and fabric shows. Attends local and national dance recitals and competitions to analyze current dance trends. Demonstrates an excellent knowledge of the Weissman customer, brand, and competitive landscape.

Fabric, Trim, and Color Development:

Assists with the selection of raw materials and colors to be utilized in the design process.

Technical Skills:

Creates technical flats of designs with accurate construction call outs. Communicates design details to Pattern Makers and Technical Designers. Fits prototypes independently with assistance from Technical Design partners to maintain the design aesthetic including silhouette, fit, and styling direction.


Development of mentoring skills with ability to mentor interns and Assistant Designers to enhance their design and technical skills. Complete performance reviews.


Displays a high level of communication and presentation skills. Ability to communicate creative vision from concept to finished product and present designs to merchants for line consideration. Uses sound judgement; holds self and others accountable for their commitments and conduct.

Business Analytics:

Analyzes sales and assortment along with competitor’s assortments, pricing, and catalog/web presentations.


Collaboratively works with Product Development team to ensure that all products meet or exceed the customer’s needs and expectations.

Timelines: Meets all internal Design, Merchandising, Purchasing and Marketing deadlines as planned

Leadership: As a member of the design team, leadership growth is a key skill to being successful. Successful introduction of ideas and processes by confidently selling them, listening and gaining influence with peers and management. Successful mentoring and training of design team members and interns.


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Apparel Design

5 to 7+ years of professional experience in Apparel Design

A comprehensive designer skill set which includes excellent illustration and CAD skills, fashion and color design aesthetic, and ability to design highly creative concepts

Strong aesthetic related to the Weissman brands and customer base

Excellent understanding of garment construction, fit, finishes and industry resources

Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud

Ability to travel to international and domestic markets

Strong work ethic and ability to work and design independently, multitask, and manage time

Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and collaborative team environment; flexible and adaptable to change

Experience with Product Development Process; understanding how to take a design from concept through commercialization

Must align in value system professionally and personally with the culture of Weissman
